We recently welcomed student Daniel from St John Rigby College into the office for a week’s work experience. Danny’s keen to pursue a career in marketing and we were delighted to introduce him to our business, clients and give some insight into what agency life is like. We asked him to keep a diary; here’s how he got on!
Monday
Starting my week at CRE8 and looking forward to it! When I arrived, I was introduced to everyone and after my induction I logged on. Vicki and I had a meeting to discuss what is going to be happening during the week and I was given some tasks. I was asked to write blog posts for two clients so I researched each business and started writing about the services that they offer. Later, I went to an open evening at a school with Vicki. This was interesting as it gave me an insight into setting up an event (getting soaked and blown around putting up a banner on a fence!).
Tuesday
This morning, Paul and I had a chat about the importance of search engine rankings and how to optimise this. I read a very interesting Google document which helps webmasters to make the most of their services. Having blogs and articles with links to social media is very important to get your website up the ranks. We then talked about the right and wrong ways of turning a prospect into a client. I finished the blogs that I started on Monday and started writing a ‘backdoor page’ for another client.
I attended two meetings. The first was with a potential new client from Atherton; it was interesting to see a meeting at the very start of a project and how to build relationships with new clients. I also sat in a meeting with a video producer. The company makes video for websites and social media and separates this footage into a number of campaigns i.e. a few short videos for Facebook and Twitter and a YouTube video. I learnt from this how long it takes to shoot a 90 second video. Videos should be limited to 90 seconds, otherwise people can lose interest.
Wednesday
On Wednesday Vicki and I spoke about the week has gone so far and we went through some of my work so far. She also showed me some examples of how CRE8 has built relationships with clients. I did some SEO work, learning how to do this with help from the Google document. I shadowed Jordan and Jonathan to discuss their jobs – Jordan also helped with the SEO I was looking at. Johnathan does the graphic design of website and then Jordan codes and builds it.
I wrote a review of the St John Rigby College website today. This was interesting because it taught me how to identify a good website and what to look for in a bad website, eg. colour coding on a good website. I also researched some schools information for a database Lauren is building.
Thursday
I went to a client meeting with a firm of financial advisers with Vicki to discuss their website’s content and strategy. This was interesting as it was a service industry rather than product-based, meaning that a different sort of marketing would be needed for the company. After this, we had to go straight to Preston for a meeting with an existing client to discuss a plan for its website. We met Paul en route. I found out about another new industry that I didn’t know about – ground remediation! We then went back to the office for coffee and cake and some research into Business Expos. I needed to find out about the people going to them so that CRE8 can market their graphic design services.
Friday
On my final day at CRE8 I was asked to research companies which could benefit from the services that CRE8 offers; what CRE8 calls its ‘gold prospects’. I also wrote this blog!
Overall I have had a very interesting week with lots of different challenges to overcome but I have really enjoyed the time I have had here with the friendly team.
Thanks Danny! We really enjoyed having you in the office with us. Good luck!
